Uma is getting married shortly. That is certainly a surprise ... And a shock for me.
Yesterday, late in the evening, Uma called me.
"I have a surprise for you ..." she said.
"You make that everyday for me ... then what's so special about this ? " I asked.
"No... not so... this is very very important and you may ... may be ... you will get shocked.." she said.
"What's so shocking ? You really shocked me during Onam holidays..." I expressed my unhappiness over her not calling me.
"That's right... the new shock is the result of that shock ... Maamma..." she was a bit slow in her reply. Must be something interesting, I thought.
She then narrated the story - her experience- of what all happened during the last few days.
Her father is now successful in locating a bridegroom for his daughter. The 'boy' is a 40+ local man, working in the defense services. He is almost lone, as his parents are no more. His siblings are settled elsewhere. He is posted in the North, and may not return to this place in the near future.
Uma says, she has agreed for the marriage. In fact, this was the shock for me. Uma all these days (over the last few years) was reciting that she won't marry. Now that she has changed her mind, I really felt it a shock. "Women are unpredictable.." I remember Uma herself telling me.
For me, I am sure, I am losing a partner. All my dreams of building a new life is void now. I have been expecting her return. But now I know, I should not have dreamt of anything like that.
But my only worry is that why did she talk to me all that ... giving a new life (may be a new kind of life !). But it's all in the dark now.
I am not sad on that. I think I must be happy that Uma is getting a new life. Socially acceptable and may be... everything will be fine for her ! I pray for that.
Uma promised me that she'll be visiting me (with her father) sometime during next month. The marriage will be in Thulam. The date is yet to be firmed up.
She continued her descriptions on the marriage preparations. I've been a listener. And I'll continue to be so !
